Perceiving a lack of commitment on the part of the Nasarawa State Government and stakeholders to address the issues of Academic Staff in the Nasarawa state University keffi, the union has called on well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the state governor Engineer Abdullahi Sule over their welfare in order to void industrial disharmony in the future.
Briefing newsmen on Tuesday, the branch Chairman, Academic staff Union of universities, Dr Samuel Alu expresses displeasure that ever since the state governor, who is the visitor to the university made a pronouncement that was conveyed to the union in writing through the secretary to the state government,nothing was or has been done.
Dr Samuel Alu categorically listed some of the grey areas where the governor promises to consider ,which includes ,taking over the full payment of salaries of the university staff. The immediate released of Two Hundred Million(#200.000,000.00),out of the over #1Billion owed the lecturers as part payment of outstanding EAA arears.Also a monthly payment of #20Million for mainstreaming of EAA.
Away from the above listed the ASUU branch chairman frowns at the general challenges which are besetting the university,hinging it on improper funding of the institution and non payment of counter part portion of compulsory contribution as provided for the personal pension scheme (PENCOM) as well as domestication of the 70 years retirement age for professorial cadre among others.
He added, ” The union engaged university management and also reached out to council and the National ASUU,seeking their intervention to help resolve the issues.
” The persistent failure to address these issues as it were, generated agitation for embarking on local industrial action by the branch” He averred.
