The IIP-SARS was on Tuesday urged to assist a complainant, Sadiq Ibrahim Abubakar to enforce a judgement entered in his favour by the FCT High Court in respect of alleged cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to him by the police.
Assisted by his counsel, Rowland Eroga, the complainant prayed the 11-Member panel presided over by Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN), on behalf of Justice Suleiman Galadima (rtd) to come to his aid and ensure that he reaps the fruit of his judgment.
Eroga used the opportunity to disclose to the panel that he has made unsuccessful attempts to get the police to comply with the judgement of the high court which was delivered by Justice Peter Afem.
The matter which was last heard on the 26th of February 2021 at the panel was adjourned for cross-examination of the petitioner.
When asked by the representative of the Chairman of the panel, Dr. Garba Tetengi SAN, why both counsel and the petitioner were before the panel despite the verdict already passed by Justice Peter of FCT high court, Roland Eroga (counsel to petitioner), said they were before the panel to give an update on the matter.
Eroga informed the panel that during the long suspension of the panel, the petitioner decided to take the matter to court where the judgment was made in his favour. He said he was at the panel to inform as well as tender a certified true copy of the judgment.
Reacting, Tetengi SAN sought to know why police was yet to honour the judgment; Malik D Taiwo informed the panel that police had filed a notice of appeal on the matter before the FCT high court.
Responding to Tetengi’s inquiry, Malik D. Taiwo, counsel to the respondents said he was surprised that the matter which has already been decided in favour of the petitioner is still being entertained before the panel.
Sadiq had in a previous hearing, narrated how the police chased him up to a distance of 300 miles and eventually shot him on the leg.
According to Sadiq “on May 19th 2020, at about 1 pm, while waiting to observe the afternoon prayers with my family, I sighted a man who pointed a gun towards my father’s window, I was apprehensive and started running”
Continuing, Sadiq said he was arrested and taken to police station Guzape FCT, that upon his release, he was taken to National Hospital Abuja where he underwent an orthopaedic treatment and plastic surgery on his right arm.
The panel adjourned the case for its report.
